I'm going to try firing up the blog again for 2016, especially the nature/landscape side of things. It is in desperate need of a redesign so I will be working on that while shooting for KSTV. Unfortunately the slideshows on older posts have been disabled by flickr. You can find all of my work in my gallery.

Watching and waiting...Monarch Caterpillars

A neighbor was kind enough to drop off two monarch caterpillars for our family to enjoy. We have been watching and feeding them for about a week. We were amazed at how much milkweed they ate and how big they grew in such a short time. After spinning a little white silk button, one of the caterpillars attached to it and curled up into the shape of a J. About 12 hours later we found the chrysalis and the skin he shed. The second time around we were determined not to miss the "wiggle dance". As soon as the second caterpillar formed the J, he was under constant watch until bedtime. We awoke this morning to another beautiful chrysalis and missed the big show again. =) We can't wait to watch them emerge as beautiful monarch butterflies. Maybe they will stick around and hang out in our newly planted butterfly and hummingbird garden.

Interesting!
I have never seen one of these caterpillars, looking forward to seeing them as butterflies too.
The photo of the flower and drops is very beautiful!

Thank you. We have had some dramatic changes in the last 24 hours. Hopefully we will have one butterfly in the next couple of days! The other one probably won't emerge for another week or so.
